Join Pack 289 for a Ranger-Led Fossil Quest at Fossil Beach!

On Saturday, May 16th, we’ll meet at Westmoreland State Park’s Visitor Center at 9:00 AM to kick off a hands-on fossil hunting adventure led by a park ranger. After a short hike down to Fossil Beach, Scouts and families will learn how ancient fossils ended up here, explore safe and responsible collection methods, and use provided tools to search for shark teeth, shells, and more.

• Meetup: 9:00 AM at the Visitor Center (145 Cliff Road, Montross, VA 22520)

• Hike: Short walk to the beach (wear sturdy shoes)

• Cost: $10 per vehicle for parking

• Tools: Provided by the park

• Dress: Weather-appropriate clothing and sun protection recommended

• Program Length: About 1–1.5 hours, with optional extended fossil hunting time

This program is free and open to the public, but Pack 289 will enjoy a dedicated ranger-led experience tailored to our Scouts. Younger siblings (including “Dragons”) and family members are welcome!

Nestled along the Potomac River, this year’s Prince William Day Camp features archery, nature exploration, campfire fun, and hands-on activities designed for every rank. Scouts will team up for challenges, earn achievements, and make memories in a safe, supervised environment — all while surrounded by the beauty of Virginia’s waterfront wilderness.

Whether your Scout is a first-time camper or a seasoned explorer, this is the highlight of the summer. Girls and boys welcome. Pack 289 registration is now open!

The Den Walker is the heartbeat of the Cub Scout Day Camp experience — a trusted adult who walks alongside a small group of Scouts, guiding them from station to station, cheering them on through each adventure, and keeping the day running smoothly. Whether it’s archery, crafts, nature hikes, or campfire songs, the Den Walker ensures every Scout feels safe, supported, and excited to explore.

This role is ideal for parents, guardians, or leaders who want to be part of the action, build connections, and help shape unforgettable memories. No prior Scout experience required — just a good pair of walking shoes, a positive attitude, and a love for kids having fun outdoors.

We are looking forward to this summer and excited for the resident camp in Goshen, VA. All rising Webelos and Arrow of Light (AOL) Scouts (current Bears and Webelos) will have the option to spend a week at Camp Ross!
